About Our Garbage Disposal Repair

A garbage disposal is a simple machine — a motor, a spinning plate with impellers and a grinding ring — but it sits where plumbing and electricity meet, so problems can look alike. A disposal that hums but doesn't spin is usually jammed. One that's completely silent may have tripped its reset button or lost power at the switch or outlet. Water under the sink could be coming from the sink flange, the dishwasher hose connection, the drain outlet or the disposal body itself.

Many disposal problems are quick fixes: clearing a jam, resetting the overload, resealing a connection or fixing a switch. Others, such as a unit leaking from its housing or a burned-out motor, usually mean the disposal has reached the end of its life. We'll tell you which one you have. We're repair-only and don't sell or install new disposals, so if yours needs replacing we'll say so and you can have a plumber install the new one.

Garbage Disposal Problems We Fix

We diagnose the cause, explain the fix and give you a clear price before any work starts.

  • Hums but won't spin

A jam between the impellers and grinding ring, or a seized motor bearing.

  • Completely dead, no sound

A tripped reset (overload) button, a bad wall or air switch, the outlet, wiring, or a burned-out motor.

  • Keeps tripping the reset button

Overloading, a partial jam, or a motor that's overheating and failing.

  • Leaking from the top

A loose or failed sink flange seal.

  • Leaking from the side

A loose dishwasher inlet hose clamp or a worn drain outlet gasket.

  • Leaking from the bottom

Usually failed internal seals — the housing is leaking and the unit typically needs replacing.

  • Drains slowly or backs up into the other sink

A clog in the disposal outlet, trap or drain line, often from grease, peels or starchy food.

  • Grinding, rattling or metal-on-metal noise

A utensil, bottle cap or bone in the chamber, or broken internal parts.

Never put your hand inside the disposal. Turn it off at the switch — and unplug it or switch off the breaker — before looking in with a flashlight.

What the $69 Garbage Disposal Diagnostic Includes

We find out whether the disposal can be repaired before anything else:

  • Check power at the switch, outlet or air switch, and the reset button
  • Clear jams safely and make sure the plate turns freely
  • Test the motor and wiring
  • Pinpoint any leak: sink flange, dishwasher inlet, drain outlet or housing
  • Check the drain connection and trap for clogs
  • Check the dishwasher connection, since a clogged disposal inlet stops dishwasher draining
  • Tell you whether the unit is repairable and quote the repair before any work begins

Repair or Replace Your Garbage Disposal?

Jams, tripped overloads, switch problems, loose connections and flange or gasket leaks are all repairable, and they're the most common disposal problems.

A disposal that leaks from the body, has a failed motor or is badly corroded inside generally isn't worth repairing — internal parts usually aren't sold separately, and a new unit makes more sense. In that case we'll tell you plainly after the diagnostic, and you can have a plumber install the replacement.

Equipment and Brands

We repair disposals from the common brands. Tell us the brand and model (on the label under the sink) when you call.

Garbage Disposal Repair FAQ

Why does my garbage disposal hum but not work?

Humming means the motor is getting power but can't turn, almost always because something is jammed. Turn off the power first. Many disposals have a hex socket on the bottom that lets you turn the motor by hand with the small wrench that came with it; after clearing the jam, press the reset button.

Where is the reset button on a garbage disposal?

It's usually a small red or black button on the bottom of the unit under the sink. If it trips again right away, there's still a jam or the motor is failing.

Can a garbage disposal leak be fixed?

Leaks from the sink flange, dishwasher hose or drain outlet can usually be fixed by resealing or replacing a gasket. A leak from the bottom of the unit usually means the internal seals have failed and the disposal should be replaced.

What shouldn't go down a garbage disposal?

Grease and oil, fibrous peels such as celery and corn husks, large bones, lots of coffee grounds, and anything that isn't food. Run cold water while it's on and for a few seconds afterward.

Do you install new garbage disposals?

No. We're repair-only and don't sell or install appliances or disposals. If yours can't be repaired, we'll tell you so you can have a plumber install a new one.

How much is the service call?

The service call is $69, and it's waived when you go ahead with the repair. After diagnosing the problem we give you a clear price before any work starts.

What warranty do you offer?

Every repair includes a 1-year warranty on installed parts and a 3-month warranty on labor.

When are you open?

Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. You can send the booking form anytime and we'll call you back during the next business day. Urgent repairs are prioritized during business hours.
